Lunar Tide Music and Arts Festival (Day 1)

I imagined Lunar Tide as a dojo where three orders of sound, Elements, Funktion, and Hennessy, would square off in a display of technique. I was not far wrong. However, this isn’t combat. It’s a celebration. Any sparring is metaphorical, and for the benefit of entertainment. There is a friendliness between crews, as the personnel of Ronin Productions, Sub Valley, and Tribal Roots along with Lunar Tide and a myriad of visual creatives curate spaces to enlighten an audience of spectators eager to scream and sink into rooms of wonder.

Entering the Lakehurst Event Center is polite. A venue that offers free parking? Well played, I’ll take that. Lake County appreciates its polizei, and several off-duty representatives ferry attendees through the process of admittance. It’s a mostly well-mannered, straight forward process of wand scans and turnarounds. I enter unscathed, and barely touched. Winner. There’s a limit on the size bag you can bring, which may cause distress to some. However, it’s a reminder, a recommendation to limit the amount of baggage holding us down. I think we can all vibe with that. One must be ready to move when the groove and the moment intersect. I’m through security and on the inside. Nice!

There are three chambers of sound, and each one hits different. Call it style, or technique, and here I will delineate the quadrants. The largest space dubbed Lunar Tide, supported by Hennessy Sound Design, absolutely thumps. It represents the main floor, where much action occurs. A sonic playground adjacent to the main room is titled DubHub X Bass Station, and equipped with a tidy arsenal of Funktion-One’s to wash over listener’s ears audial excellence. Venture up the staircase to the second floor, you’ll discover a Solar Tide stage decorated with Elements of immersive design. These bad boys scream, or so I’ve been told. I kind of prefer to think they sing. Each of the company’s responsible for production of their platforms takes pride in the setup, and they are thoroughly engaged in ensuring the audience is well thought of.

Appreciation and respect for the professionals who prepare these spaces for presentation aside, most come for the performers. Through my time spent freewheeling between the three rooms and catching different aspects of different sets, I perceive notions. Moments of engagement, drops heavy and hard, where I’m bouncing my bottom end to the floor and back up.

Perspectives are great, and for a moment the sounds cultured by these audio samurai make me feel as if I’m in a forest of vibrations. Cool Customer, is just that. Around 9:17PM, some technical difficulties occur, through which fella keeps his composure. Calm. He practices what he preaches. A few short moments later, we’re back on track. He’s still balling. Bro, playboy is throwing wild style, renditions of tracks ‘Check It Out’ and ‘In your Face’ I’ve never heard before. I’m loving it. Ternion Sound follows suit and keeps the energy pumping, while upstairs Epoch and Hypho are, as well, thumping. This place is jumping. When Alix Perez unleashes drum and bass, I go ham, hard, before I find my way upstairs for thirty minutes of Hamdi. Balance, in all things. There’s so much to see, and I want to be considerate of the efforts of all parties involved.

Now, the night isn’t without weirdness, naturally. For some reason, the second floor is a non-alcohol zone on Friday. You can drink merrily on the first floor, but you gotta chug if you want to get to the next level. Elevation? “It’s a bold strategy, Cotton, let’s see if it pays off for them.” You know what I find? The second floor bar is the perfect place to quickly grab a water and red-bull, and I chug that bull piss straight down my gullet. I’m getting jacked, for the culmination of Friday night’s entertainment. Shades.

Apart from sonic symphonies, I love that Lunar Tide boasts artistry. That’s my motivation, you’re inspiring me! Burgeoning creatives who take complex ideas from their minds eye and fashion them to fresco, for eager onlookers to observe, are my jam, ma’am. Complimenting the heavies on stage are the likes of Tom Loranz, Dakota Rogers, Rikky Baus, Lucien TrapArt, Kemetic Creations, Tyler Chauza, and I finally met The Whimsical Libra, amongst a cadre of other exceptional visual visionaries painting what they feel through two floors. That’s cool, music and artistry together is beautiful, baby!

Lunar Tide’s price of admission is worth your attention, and especially with another day to go. Acts like The Widdler, Parkbreezy, Thought Process, Copycatt, Bommer B2B Yunit, Visages, and don’t let me forget Of The Trees, to name but only a few, will have your body rocking throughout the night and into the early morning. I’ll happily be making my way to Waukegan’s Lakehurst Events for another round of exhibition from the professionals and musical maestros. Music is an excellent way to motivate your steps, so let’s dance. I’ll have my ‘Bear Style’ on full display, throughout the night. Don’t be afraid to say hello, we’re on the same team. Collaboration is the highest order of respect.

Be well, be successful. Bear Swiftly.
